People say you can tell a lot about a person by listening to their music. I believe so too.

While listening to the radio on a seven-hour drive to the Rocky Mountains, Canada last week, I had a strange compulsion to share 20 songs that I love the most. Perhaps that way, you can know about me more.

So without further ado, in no particular order, here they are:

1. These Days – Rascall Flatts

This song talks about longing. While the singer knows that he can’t go back to the past, he wants to still long for it. Somehow, he’s not ready to move on, and I believe it’s something that all of us can relate to.

I wake up and tear drops
They fall down like rain
I put on that old song we danced to and then
I head off to my job
Guess not much has changed

Punch the clock
Head for home
Check the phone, just incase
Go to bed
Dream of you
That’s what I’m doing these days

2. The Man Who Can’t Be Moved – The Script

This is actually such a weird song. Okay, at the very least, the lyrics are. Like, the man will still be there on the corner, every day, every month, every year? Ehm. But still, it gets the point across.

‘Cause if one day you wake up and find that you’re missing me
And your heart starts to wonder where on this earth I could be
Thinking maybe you’ll come back here to the place that we’d meet
And you’ll see me waiting for you on the corner of the street

3. Tonight – FM Static

I’m not sure if everyone knows this song, but this is my all time’s favourite. First you think that this is just another break-up song. Then, you realise that his lover has passed away. One day while listening to this song, I realised that truth. And I cried. And my life would never be the same.

I remember the car you were last seen in
And the games we would play

4. Let Her Go – Passenger

Probably the simplest song on earth. It’s full of ambiguous phrases, but everyone knows what they really mean.

But you only need the light when it’s burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go

5. A Thousand Years – Christina Perri

I kinda feel the need to disclose that I’m not a fan of the Twilight series (I might even be the anti-fan). But I love the song. It’s… pure.

I have loved you for a thousand years
I’ll love you for a thousand more

6. He’s Walking Her Home – Mark Schultz

My sister introduced this song to me. And ever since I heard it, I have always wanted a man who walks me home every day. And I’ve found him.

He was walking her home
And holding her hand
Oh the way she smiled it stole the breath right out of him
Down that old road
With the stars up above
He remembers where he was the night he fell in love
He was walking her home

7. Lonely – Shannon Noll

That classic melancholy song that you can sing to your heart’s content. Especially when your heart is broken to pieces.

Do you ever get lonely baby
Don’t you ever get tired of living that way
Don’t you ever wonder whether there’s a better life,
out there yeah
Do you ever think about what we had
And how you’d give anything to get it back
Do you ever think you’ll never love that way again

8. Practice Love – JJ Lin

The only Chinese song that goes to this list. It’s not even that popular in the world, but the story behind this song captures my heart forever.

The singer/songwriter dedicated this song to his childhood friend who died in a plane accident.

Who says that the sun will find the moon?
The love others have, we can’t imitate.

9. Back to December – Taylor Swift

A song about swallowing pride, and saying that we are wrong. That’s the only way to let go of the past.

So this is me swallowing my pride
Standing in front of you saying, “I’m sorry for that night.”
And I go back to December all the time.

10. Payphone – Maroon 5

The only upbeat song that made to the list? Probably. I just realise that I really love melancholy songs. Oh my. Anyways, I love this song because I can sing it out loud. The lyrics don’t really have anything to do with it… I guess.

I’m at a payphone trying to call home
All of my change I spent on you

11. Will You Wait for Me -Kavana

This is my favourite song back when I was still in High School. I guess it’s because my parents used to have this rule to “not date anyone until I’m 21”, so ehm, it’s kinda self-explanatory? It’s kinda ironic, because I think the person the singer’s singing to has passed away…

Cause time will pass me by
Maybe I’ll never learn to smile
But I know I’ll make it through,
If you wait for me…

12. If Tomorrow Never Comes – Ronan Keating

Do you watch the movie Ghost? Then you’ll have no explanation whatsoever on why I love this song.

If tomorrow never comes
Will she know how much I loved her
Did I try in every way to show her every day
That she’s my only one

13. Bless The Broken Road – Rascal Flatts

I cheated, because I just heard this song last week. But it’s been playing there on my head every single minute. So.

Every long lost dream led me to where you are
Others who broke my heart they were like Northern stars
Pointing me on my way into your loving arms
This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you

14. Safe and Sound – Taylor Swift

It’s Katniss. It’s Peeta. It’s The Hunger Games. Enough said.

I remember tears streaming down your face
When I said, I’ll never let you go
When all those shadows almost killed your light
I remember you said, don’t leave me here alone
But all that’s dead and gone has passed tonight

15. Do You Hear The People Sing? – Les Miserables

YEAP. I love the lyrics so much. It’s so patriotic. So emotional. So powerful.

Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!

16. Circle of Life – Disney

Just because of the first twenty seconds of the song.

Nants ingonyama bagithi Baba
Sithi uhm ingonyama
Nants ingonyama bagithi baba
Sithi uhhmm ingonyama Ingonyama Siyo Nqoba

Ingonyama Ingonyama nengw’ enamabala

17. That’s When I Love You – Aslyn

Classic. Love. Song. At least for me.

When you have to look away
When you don’t have much to say
That’s when I love you
I love you, just that way

18. I Wanna Grow Old with You – The Wedding Singer

Just because.

I wanna make you smile whenever you’re sad
Carry you around when your arthritis is bad
All I wanna do is grow old with you

19. Superman – Five for Fighting

That artsy song that’s so light you can’t stop listening to it.

I’m more than a bird,
I’m more than a plane
I’m more than some pretty face beside a train
It’s not easy to be me

20. Already Home – A Great Big World

My boyfriend gave me this song. And it’s about long distance relationship. So you know why I love it.

If only New York wasn’t so far away
I promise this city won’t get in our way
When you’re scared and alone
Just know that I’m already home

…Now I come to think that there’s something really wrong with my taste in music. I’m pulling my blanket now. Goodnight.
